City Grammar School - THEN and NOW Pages

Philip Wright

Left CGS in 1959 following the very successful school trip to Switzerland and joined the Industrial Section of the Mottershaw Photographic Group in Sheffield whilst also attending the City & Guilds Photography Course at Rotherham Polytechnic.

1960 changed direction and joined the Wright family business manufacturing Scissors & Shears.  Completed the full 3 years Cutlery Apprenticeship Course, attaining the top Apprentice Award each year, winning visits to the German, French & Italian Cutlery Centres.

Finally, after 7 years, married Pauline Stocks (CGS 1957 - 1962) in June 1965.  I used to tell her that my initials stood for Perfect (in) Every Way & at first she used to believe me, but following 39 years of marriage in to months time, she is now not so sure.  Typical Pisces ! (but being married to a Capricorn, can't really blame her!)

Produced two Children, at least Pauline did, one of each make, Nick in 1969 who now heads up the successful Syncordia Team within BT and Angela in 1971 who is PA to the Manager of Esporta in Sheffield.

Following 10 years gaining practical experience in all the various departments of the business, became responsible for both Home & Export Sales, gaining the Cutlers Company Award for Exports for the business.  That was before the far East commenced attacking all of our markets.

Made a Freeman of the Cutlers' Hall & the Worshipful Company of Cutlers' in Hallamshire in 1977.  Also became a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing & served on the Committee of the Sheffield Branch for several years.

Following 20 years of negotiating numerous  successful takeovers, unfortunately the far East finally won the day in 1988 and I had the heartache of putting the business into voluntary liquidation.  However, the Company was successfully sold, but I jumped ship and went as the Group Home & Export Sales Manager for the Egginton Group in Sheffield where I stayed for 11 years until 1999.

Re-joined our old family business of Kutrite of Sheffield Ltd., negotiating a successful Management Buy-out in June 2000, purchasing the majority shareholding and became Chairman & Company Secretary.  However, trade in my UK manufacturing industry is extremely difficult and our business is no exception.

Spare time activities consist mainly of a life time interest in photography and I have been a member of the Bakewell Photographic Circle since 1960, being Treasurer for over 30 years and President for the last 7 years.

Pauline and I are keen caravanners and have been Members of the Cavalier Caravan Club for over 30 years becoming Chairman in 1994.  Have toured the length and breadth of Europe with our caravan on numerous occasions.  Both of us enjoy driving and both became Members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists in 1986.
Love work and travel.  To date have a clean bill of health but in more recent years have become allergic to domineering women !!
